PREPARATION FOR EXTERIOR PAINTING
When preparing houses for painting, the following steps are taken:
1. Ensuring all nails are hammered below the surface using a nail set.
2. Scraping off any loose paint using a scraper.
3. Using chemical strippers and/or sanding to remove all agreed-upon paint layers. Ground is covered to catch paint debris and cleaned daily.
4. Neutralizing the stripper with a TSP substitute, applied, scrubbed, and rinsed with a hose.
5. Sanding all wood with 80 grit paper and palm sanders until bare without producing paint dust.
6. Hand cleaning siding with damp painting rags.
7. Filling all nail holes with putty, caulking cracks and seams, and spackling wood defects, avoiding caulking along horizontal undersides of siding to prevent water retention.
8. Sanding all spackling and cleaning siding again.
9. Priming siding by brush with a first coat of exterior oil primer thinned about 10% with paint thinner for better wood penetration.
10. Conducting a second round of preparation (spackling, addressing wood defects, etc.) to address any missed defects or nail holes after priming.
11. Sanding all siding with 120 grit sandpaper to remove stiffened wood fibers and apply a second round of spackling.
12. Cleaning siding once more.
13. Applying a full-strength coat of oil primer to all siding by brush for thorough priming and preparation.
14. Lightly sanding the primer by hand.
15. Cleaning siding again.
16. Applying the first coat of exterior paint by brush.
17. Checking for defects and lightly sanding by hand if necessary.
18. Applying the second coat of exterior paint by brush.
*The above procedures apply to all stripped wood surfaces, including door and window frames, trim, columns, etc.
